APACALDA is the project of Montreal-based singer and composer Cassandra Angheluta, whose emotionally immersive music blends goth-tinged indie pop and electronic textures into a distinctive alternative sound.

Her debut full-length album There’s a Shadow in My Room and It Isn’t Mine (June 13th 2025) features collaborations with Mishka Stein (Patrick Watson), Juno Award-Winning engineer Samuel Woywitka (Half Moon Run, SAMWOY), Dayhills (Skiifall), and Christophe Lamarche-Ledoux (Charlotte Cardin). The record received coverage and mentions from Billboard Canada, The Line of Best Fit, RANGE Magazine, Le Devoir, and CULT MTL and was featured on editorial Spotify playlists including Fresh Finds, New Music Friday Canada, Café Montréalais, ALT QC and Montreal Chill.

Visually, her music videos have gained international attention. She’s Not Coming was shortlisted by 1.4 Brilliant Filmmaking Awards (2025), won Music Video of the Week at the Berlin Music Video Awards (2025) and was selected to screen at the SEEYOUSOUND International Music Film Festival in Turin, Italy (2025). Male Gaze from her debut EP, was also an official selection at the Toronto International Women's Film Festival (2022).

The name APACALDA, meaning “warm water” in Romanian, symbolizes Angheluta’s cultural roots and, symbolically, the sense of healing and refuge she finds through music. With a growing reputation for striking honesty, atmosphere and sharp artistic direction, APACALDA is fast becoming one of Montreal’s most compelling new voices.

ADDITIONAL

RBC’s First Up program (2025) - Selected artist, participant honorarium & mentorship

“The songs on There’s a Shadow in my Room are cohesive but unpredictable, from the raw grunge of “Dead Weight” to dark synthpop of “Darkness” to the deep psychedelia of “Almost Burnt the House Down”. What unifies them is Angheluta’s fearless and introspective lyrics, which delve into deeply personal territory without ever veering into self-pity or feeling staged. Her confessional writing feels raw and immediate, like she’s working something out in real time.”

— Turn and Work

“APACALDA's debut album is a brooding, reverb-drenched odyssey through loneliness, memory and spectral longing. Standouts like "Dead Weight" and "Almost Burnt the House Down" feel like transmissions from a haunted bedroom. It's a record that doesn't shout - it lingers, creeps and curls into your bones. This shadowy debut is more of an intimate séance than an album - and all the better for it.”

— CULT MTL

“There's A Shadow In My Room And It Isn't Mine is also obsessed with death, but not in the literal sense. It treats endings as sonic rituals, slow deaths we endure every day: identity shedding, emotional moulting, or the uncomfortable silence that follows after truth you can't un-hear. Each track draws listeners into an atmospheric world where gritty guitars and layered synthesizers meet, softened by melodic moments that provide calm amid the album's intensity and Angheluta's powerful voice.”

— RANGE

“APACALDA is a magnetic performer who brings you on a magical journey. Luring you in with her soft, seductive vocals, and then stabbing you with her jagged lyrics. It was one of those shows where I remember when it started, but when it was over, I could only recall fragmented bits like flashbacks. Was I drugged? Did APACALDA hypnotize me?”

There’s a Shadow in My Room and It Isn’t Mine is APACALDA’s most vulnerable and cinematic work to date. Across eleven tracks, the Montreal-based artist confronts the unseen weight of mental health, tracing the ways we carry burdens that are not always ours yet shape us profoundly.

Merging indie, electronic pop, and post-punk with sweeping orchestral textures, APACALDA crafts soundscapes that are both haunting and cathartic. Her lyrics act as confessions and reflections, peeling back layers of fear, memory, and resilience with unflinching honesty. From the explosive urgency of “Darkness” to the fragile stillness of “Wait Another Day” and “Heavy Bag,” the album balances intensity with intimacy, moving fluidly between high-energy anthems and quiet, raw meditations.

At its core, the record is about shadows—those inner figures we inherit, suppress, or wrestle with—and the process of naming them in order to let go. APACALDA’s storytelling refuses to turn away from pain but instead illuminates it, revealing both its weight and its potential for transformation.

Visually and sonically, the album embraces a cinematic edge: immersive, unsettling at times, but ultimately tender. It resonates with anyone who has felt haunted by invisible forces yet is searching for release, belonging, and light.

With There’s a Shadow in My Room and It Isn’t Mine, APACALDA steps into her own as a daring and empathetic voice in the indie landscape—one that doesn’t just acknowledge the shadows but dares to hold them, study them, and finally, let them go.
